The start of the month of Our Lady brought some beautiful weather, making it an ideal time for fourth class to complete a local trail of Borrisoleigh. Children walked all around the village observing buildings, landmarks etc. and answered questions based on lots of curricular subjects eg. History, Geography, Maths, English. The children thoroughly enjoyed the trail and even got time to play in park for a short while before home time.
Loud cheers were heard in Scoil Naomh Cualán on Friday, 11th May when past pupil, Katie Shanahan arrived at the school with her cup after winning the solo song competition in the All Ireland final of Scór. We are all so very proud of Katie in Borrisoleigh as she is the first representative to win an All Ireland medal in Senior Scór. Katie gave a beautiful and touching performance of the the winning song ‘Orphan Girl’ . We wish Katie all the very best in her Leaving Cert and for the future.
Hard luck to our U-11 boys and girls teams who tried so hard in their recent blitzes but unfortunately did not progress to a county final.
Congratulations to the U-13 hurling team who were crowned North Champions on the 11th of May 2017. They defeated a valiant Dromakeenan team in the park and progressed to the county semi-final which they also won. All roads from Borrisoleigh led to Semple Stadium, on Friday 26th May for County Final Day. Congratulations to the U13 hurling team who won the Roinn A County title . This was a wonderful achievement for the boys and girls involved. Captain, Padraic McCormack accepted the trophy after a very exciting game against Gaelscoil Thiobraid Árann. It was truly a great day for the school and for all the proud parents in attendance. Well done to everyone who helped make this such a memorable day for the boys, especially Mr. Small and Michael Ryan who yet again lead our team to great success. Well done to our U-13 Camogie finalists who also played in Semple Stadium on the same day. Unfortunately luck was not with us on the day and Ballylooby were crowned county champions. We were equally proud of our talented girls, as of our boys and are in no doubt that we will be back in Semple Stadium shortly!
It was with great excitement that the Harty Cup was greeted in Scoil Naomh Cualan on Wednesday, May 31st . Three of the squad from Borrisoleigh (Jerry, Ray and James) arrived at the school with vice-principal, Mr. Willie Butler . Mr. Butler and Ray spoke to the boys and girls about the need to commit in order to achieve no matter what interest you have eg. music, art, sport etc. Children were also reminded of the old saying ‘practice makes perfect’. Great cheers were heard when Mr. Butler asked that children be excused from homework that evening.
Congratulations to all the children in second class who recently made their First Communion on May 27th. The ceremony was beautiful from start to finish. The children were so well prepared by their teacher Mrs. Butler. Each and every child said their prayers, poems etc. perfectly. Their instrumental after Communion was absolutely fantastic. The school choir sang for this very special occasion.
Jane and Shane from sixth class along with Mrs. Kenneally travelled to Hotel Kilkenny on Wednesday, 24th May 2107 to collect the third Green Flag for Scoil Naomh Cualan. We were awarded the flag for water conservation. Well done to all the children and staff in the school who made an excellent effort over the last few years to save water consumption. We are all really looking forward to the raising of the Green Flag on Friday, 16th June.
